The Town of High River and Foothills County are in talks about commercial plans where the Baptist Church and a couple of farm implements dealers sit.

The county is in the early stages of rezoning the land to allow for more commercial activity on the east side of Highway 2.

High River Mayor Craig Snodgrass says the Town wants to see more details.

"We asked the county what's going to go in there and how it's serviced and at the end of the day we want to know is it going to affect the town of High River and our businesses," he says. "The number one thing is there's an Area Structure Plan going but there's also the bigger issue of the proper servicing plan that's going to be needed that we will want to see, not only us but the Calgary Metropolitan Region Board will want to see that as well, because that's the number one issue, how that area will be serviced with water and wastewater."

He says the Town isn't in a position to provide that area with water or wastewater services.

Another concern has arisen about how drivers would be able to get in and out of the area on the highway.

"There's concept drawings of how that would look east of the overpass, but if you're looking at putting a big truck stop in there the cost of the infrastructure to build that transportation access is enormous so that's another area any developer would have to look at is what kind of Off-Site Levies would be involved with providing proper access to the area, Snodgrass says.

He says both sides are still early in the process and are asking questions and getting clarifications on the different aspects of the plan.
