An Alberta musician will be paying a visit to Okotoks this week for a worthy cause.

Doug Rawling will be playing a free show at Grace Lutheran Church at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 6, and there's a bit of a story behind his visit.

Behind it all is Okotokian Mark Thomson, who’s taken on a sizable fundraising goal.

“I got permission from our church board to raise money to make our church wheelchair accessible. At first, we thought this would mean putting in a ramp, but we learned from a contractor that we don’t have space, so now we are looking at putting in an elevator and an accessible washroom on the main floor.”

All in all, the project will cost about $140,000.

Thomson has been working away at the fundraising goal for a year now, with past fundraising events including a silent auction at the church back in November.

Having been familiar with Rawling’s music for most of his life, Thomson reached out to the recording artist to see if he’d lend his talent to the fundraiser, to which Rawling agreed.

There’s no cover fee for the show, but donations for the accessibility project are welcome.
