Brown paper bag strips with messages of spring were hung from trees in High River Saturday.

The Highwood Calligraphers and Artists put them up in a brisk wind on Saturday, the first day of spring, in George Lane Park and near the hospital.

They're meant to spread positive messages and welcome in the season.

They originally came from the Japanese tradition of attaching prayer slips to trees. A short verse is written on a strip cut from a brown paper bag with a piece of twine attached.

They're then hung outdoors in the elements and allowed to biodegrade.

Should the birds and squirrels decide to use them for their nests, even better.

The group hopes these messages bring a smile to the faces of those strolling by.
