The 1st Okotoks Scouts are back selling Christmas trees this year, with a few changes. For years, they've been selling trees from a lot on the Safeway parking lot on Southridge Drive. While they're still in the Safeway parking lot this year, Safeway has moved to D'Arcy Crossing shopping centre on the north end of town, and so too has the scouts' tree lot. Fundraising coordinator Jackie Heuver says they've also got some more variation in their trees this year. "We actually have a new supplier, so we're trying out some new trees. What I've seen on the lot so far looks great. We do have a selection of taller trees this year, up to about eight feet, and then we have a variety of trees ranging in price from $20 up to $135." Their website lists Douglas Firs (BC), Regular Firs (Grand & Fraser), and Premium Firs (Canaan & Noble). Heuver recommends acting faster than usual this year. "Last year we sold out by December 15, and we have 100 trees less than last year, so I would suggest, for best selection, getting in over the next week." The sale of Christmas trees is the local scouts' biggest annual fundraiser. "This helps all of our youth go to camps, so when we do overnight tent camps or cabin camps, our weekly programming, any adventures they choose to go on... We will have Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, and Vents out on our tree lot, as we really try to get the kids involved in this fundraiser. So hopefully, if you stop by, you'll see one of our scouting members our there helping you pick out a tree," says Heuver. Their lot is open from 4:30-7:30 p.m. on Monday to Friday, and from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on weekends. They take cash and credit card payments, and are not taking payments online.
