Community members in High River are fundraising to pave a portion of the Happy Trail path system.

The Director of Community Services Lisa Reinders says the path is on top of a dyke that runs south from 7th Street.

"Duncan Scott is our Community Ambassador and he came up with the idea of doing a Canada 150 Legacy project and what we chose as a group is to pave from 7th street to Macleod Trail on top of the dyke," Reinders says. "Part of this dyke is, right now it's gravel and so then getting funding to pave it so it connects the Happy Trails from 7th Street to Macleod Trail."

Renewal Manager for the Town, and project lead, Jessica Giesbrecht says getting donations is key.

"We are starting with some preliminary numbers, some estimates as to what the project will cost and then from there we are working on fundraising, so right now we are in the midst to fundraising, had a big push on Canada day and to date have raised over $13,000 towards the cost o the project," she says. "The total cost of the project is approximately $150,000."

She says they'd like to have it done by Canada Day 2018, but the project is contingent on fundraising and without the funding in place they can't sign any contracts to get the work done.

Reinders says they are going to be looking at the Community Facility Improvement Program. They hope to have the request ready to go to the provincial government in September and could hear if they're successful in January.

Donors can help pave ten metres of pathway by donating $1,500 or one metre of pathway for $150.

Reinders says they are looking at ways to recognize the donors.
