The Town of High River and local bird watchers are looking at the possibility of enticing a breeding pair of peregrine falcons to town.

Local birder, Greg Wagner, says the provincial building downtown would be an ideal spot for a nesting box.

"I can just imagine sitting and having coffee in High River at one of the restaurants or cafe's and watching these peregrine falcons for the summer."

He says the total cost would be about a hundred bucks in materials and the labour to build it and place it on the building.

"The building is tall enough. It's at the height the peregrine's will nest and with any luck we could have it. I think the box could stay in place for about five years. But if it doesn't work out all we'll be out is about $100 in materials cost and a couple hours of people's time."

He says it might take a little time for the falcons to find it, so they'd have to take some precautions to keep other large birds away.

"I think the one thing we might want to do is to have some sort of door on it, so you can close it from September 1st to around the end of March so you can keep the great horned owls out of it."

Wagner says the building is the right height for the falcons and with the river close by there's ample food for the birds of prey.

Wagner says the birds are no longer on the endangered species list, but it would be great to have a breeding pair in the area on a regular basis.
