If you've ever thought about joining the army, the opportunity is closer than ever before.

The King's Own regiment will be expanding to the Foothills and Capt. David Neely of 'B' Squadron says they are getting closer to securing a building to train out of.

"We're actually going to put a base down here. We have a few locations we're looking at between High River and Okotoks for our weekly training base." Capt. Neely adds "the benefit of this would be trainees won't have to go all the way into downtown Calgary."

Different regiments of the Army Reserves specialize in different things, Capt. Neely says the King's Own Calgary Regiment in the Foothills has a pretty cool specialty.

"We're part of the Armored Core, in Armoured Reconnaissance, so in a brigade setting what we would be doing in armoured vehicles is getting ahead of the main body, identifying where the enemy is and bringing back that intel and pictures, and forming what we call protective screens around the rest of the brigade."

Of course there is still basic weapons, fitness, and survival training included for all reserve groups.

Capt. Neely says the fleet the regiment uses is expecting an upgrade soon.

"We're in vehicles so we're fast and we can travel light." Capt. Neely adds "We are getting some TAPV's which is a new vehicle, and we are expecting that upgrade to our fleet next year."
