As we continue into spring and summer, motorcyclists will be out and about in greater numbers, and as such here are a few safety tips.

Manager of the High River Ultimate Bike Shop or BKMS, Jason Graf says there are a couple things you can do to stay safe on the roads.

"Big thing check your tire pressures, everybody gets on their bikes and they get ready to go. That's going to be one of the leading causes of slideouts and slips, going all over the place. Another thing is make sure you're properly wearing your gear, helmets, jackets, pants, footwear are all very important in our riding season for sure."

Graf added that early in the season many roads are still covered with loose dust and gravel which can be pretty slippery for new riders.

Graf says drivers of non-motorcycles need to pay attention too, as motorcycles are less predictable than other vehicles.

"Their acceleration, and their ways of getting around are a lot more maneuverable than most vehicles right. So, when you see a motorcycle coming your perception of seeing it, you actually want to watch them pass before you pull out in front of them because, you can't actually figure out how fast they're going."

Graf says motorcycles can stop a lot quicker and shorter than a car, so drivers should give them a little bit more of a distance when following.

Graf added that the more visible motorcyclists are the better.

"Riders beware, truck drivers beware, we are out in force. But, be visible, be loud, be seen, it's the way to go."
