The Town of Okotoks & Fire Department is teaming up to remind those who are getting out to do some skating that a few places should be looked at as off-limits.

Okotoks Firefighter Bob Button says it's important for people to understand that the Sheep River is unsafe and should never be stood or skated on.

"As far as the sheep river goes, absolute no walking, we see people out there sometimes walking with their family or their dog and as the Town of Okotoks and the Fire Department we do not condone that behaviour in any way."

Button says the river isn't the only place they do not endorse.

"As far as skating on the Crystal Shores Lake goes, we do not condone that, The Town or the Fire Department does not and will not ever say that any water is safe."

Button says while it's been said over and over it needs to be said again that the storm ponds around town are off-limits and should never be skated or walked on during the winter.

The Town has flooded a plethora of ice surfaces for the town's residents to use and Button says if you want to skate those are the best place to go with the worst case being some bruised knees rather than falling through to the water below.

"The only publicly safe skating facilities outdoor are the man-made outdoor rinks that the town has created, I believe we have 12-14 outdoor rinks created including the skating track in Laudan Park.
