Farmers around the MD of Foothills are starting to hit the fields as they're busy with their spring planting season.

MD of Foothills Agriculture Fieldman Jeff Porter says the conditions are just about right to get that crop in the ground.

"Ground temperatures are starting to come up. We've had some definite radiant heat out of the Sun, bringing ground temperatures up. With this moisture, we're going to have good field conditions here going into seeding."

Porter says the trick is making sure the ground is warm enough and dry enough.

He says if the grounds too cold, or too wet, the seeds won't germinate right away, which means they'll sit in the dirt and rot instead of starting to go, which can affect yield and quality."

Porter says there's no one "go to" crop this year for farmers based on market conditions.

He says you can expect to see the usual mix of wheat, barley, canola and peas.
