Resolutions from all over will be put to votes at this week's Alberta Urban Municipalities Association convention in Calgary.

The Town of High River has put forward a resolution, that was first drawn up by the Director of Emergency Management Carly Benson, and will be presented at the convention by councillor Don Moore, calling on the Province to bring together Emergency Management and Emergency Social Services into one ministry.

Emergency Management falls under Municipal Affairs and Emergency Social Services under the Ministry of Community and Social Services.

Further confusing matters the mandate for Emergency Social Services at the local level falls under the Director of Emergency Management.

The Town acknowledges a review of the government’s response to and recovery from 2013 floods suggests the Ministry of Human Services is best positioned to lead the Emergency Social Services program since Human Services has the expertise at the provincial level.

But, in emergencies, the direct delivery of social services is done by the local authority, supported by non-governmental organizations and provincial ministries.

The AUMA convention starts Wednesday, November 22, at the Telus Convention Centre in Calgary.

It wraps up Friday, November 24.
