The eligibility threshold to receive the AstraZeneca vaccine in Alberta has been lowered to age 40.

Starting on Tuesday, April 20th, anyone born in 1981 or earlier will be able to book appointments for the vaccine, with walk-ins available at the Calgary and Edmonton clinics and some pharmacies.

Previously, the eligibility threshold was 55 years old.

The decision comes following a recommendation from Dr. Deena Hinshaw, with the benefit of vaccine availability weighed against the risk of adverse effects.

According to a release from the province, the AstraZeneca vaccine is shown to reduce infection by up to 70%, and the risk of severe outcomes by 80%.

A list of pharmacies by region is available on the Alberta Blue Cross website, along with phone numbers and links to each pharmacy's website for those looking to book an appointment.

The availability of walk-ins at individual pharmacies is also listed.

575,425 additional Albertans are now eligible for vaccination, bringing the total to 2.3 million.
