A 20-year old woman is dead after a collision between a car and cyclist Wednesday afternoon.

Okotoks RCMP Sgt. Ian Shardlow says they were called out to Highway 7, about four kilometres west of town, at around 1 o'clock.

"The cyclist experienced some difficulties and ended up riding into eastbound lane of traffic," he explains. "A grey Honda Ridgeline that was also travelling eastbound on the highway struck the cyclists - she was pronounced dead on scene."

Shardlow says there were several witnesses to the event.

"At the time of the collision the deceased was riding her bicycle with her father, who was also on his own bicycle, and witnessed the entire collision. Several other people who witnessed the collision remained on scene to provide statements to the investigators and render first aid to the parties involved."

He adds, "We'd like to thank them for their assistance in relation to that and we're asking that if anybody else witnessed the collision to contact us at their earliest convenience."

RCMP are withholding the name of the deceased until all next of kin notifications are made.

The matter remains under investigation.
