The Calgary Flames snatched defeat from the jaws of victory Thursday night in their season opener in Washington.

Up 3-0 and 4-1, the Flames couldn't hold the lead as Alexander Ovechkin scored twice in regulation to tie it up and then in the shootout to give the Caps the win 5-4.

David Jones, Lee Stempniak, Jiri Hudler and Lance Bouma were the Flames scorers.

The Flames are in Columbus Friday night.
