An important piece of flood mitigation meant to protect downtown High River has received the "all clear".

Chief of Fire and Community Safety, Cody Zebedee says the floodgate on the south end of the Centre Street bridge worked well.

"The flood gate, we do our annual test every May to make sure that we can clean the track out so that if we do have to use it during hazard season everything is ready for us, it gives the crew a chance to pull the plates out of the ground and inspect them and inspect the track and then we physically operate all the components on the flood gate just to make sure everything is functioning and operating."

He says it also gave crews who'll have to operate the gate in an emergency a chance to get a bit of a refresher on how to operate it.
