Hours after the Senate Transport Committee recommended that Senators kill the Tanker Ban Bill C-48, Alberta Premier Jason Kenney has urged Albertans to reach out and join the cause.

Premier Kenney says Bill C-48 is a direct attack on Alberta's oil sector.

“On behalf of all Albertans, I thank the committee for listening to Alberta – and many other deeply concerned voices – and bringing common sense to the debate around this proposed legislation." Kenney adds "This bill’s sole purpose is to suffocate Alberta’s energy industry and score ill-conceived political points that threaten our national unity."

Next week Premier Jason Kenney and Alberta Energy Minister Sonya Savage will meet with senators to describe the full extent that northern BC tanker ban would have on Alberta's economy.

“Our fight does not end here. This is an important first victory, but our battle hasn’t yet been won. That is why I am calling on members of the Senate to vote down Bill C-48.  Next week, I will sit down with a number of senators to discuss the many problems with this bill and Bill C-69. I’ve also asked Energy Minister Sonya Savage to engage with senators so they fully understand the magnitude of the damaging effects these bills will have on Alberta’s and Canada’s energy industry."

Kenney says Albertans are encouraged to take part in the movement by politely and respectfully contacting Alberta members of the Senate.

"I would like to call upon all Albertans to take a moment to contact members of the Canadian Senate, asking them to support the senate committees opposition to bill C-48. We will make available on my Facebook page and in other social media channels, contact information for all of Alberta's senators."  Kenney says it would show support to the committee members. "We ask that people contact them and Senators from other provinces, in a polite and respectful way to send a message to listen not only to the people of this province, but to Senators from across the country on that committee who made a courageous decision."

He also added the UCP government is committed to asking the senate to also deny the 'No More Pipelines Bill" and in their first piece of legislature, Kenney and UCP MLA's will be taking action of the provincial carbon tax.
