Downtown High River is turning into a very attractive place to hold special events.

Which brings about the question of just how to use public spaces.

It was starting to be a problem as organizers often had to go to two or three departments within the town to find answers.

So administration within the Town of High River has put together a plan with called The Public Realm Policy.

The policy is for groups holding special events, film production, mobile businesses and community projects on spaces owned by the Town of High River.

Jodi Dawson, Manager of Economic Development, says this document is a flexible approach to things like closing 4th Ave.

"It is making the statement that yes we wish for the public to make use of these spaces." said Dawson. "And then administration has created procedures to outline the how to bring it to life."

She adds this policy makes it easier for people to apply for and host special events in public spaces.

"The traditional approach might have been just to create a bylaw where there is a black and white, where this is allowed and this isn't allowed."

They wanted a policy keeps everything flexible and the document allows them to grow and adapt the procedures as they learn.
