Since 1993 Samaritan's Purse's Operation Christmas Child has distributed more than 100 million shoebox gifts to children around the world which includes thousands from the Foothills area.

Jim Graham is the Local Area Coordinator for High River and Nanton and says last year they collected approximately 900 of 662,000 shoeboxes that were collected across Canada.

He says the collection location in High River this year is at the High River Alliance Church and in Okotoks at the Evangelical Free Church.

Boxes to fill can also be picked up at these locations as well as at the dollar stores in High River and Okotoks.

Graham says the best place to find out what kinds for things you should or shouldn't pack is on their website at http://www.samaritanspurse.ca/rss/operation-christmas-child/get-involved/operation-christmas-child-packing-your-shoe-boxes.aspx.

The gift-filled shoe boxes will be collected at both churches between November 18th and 24th and then will be shipped to the sorting and distribution centre in Calgary.

He says, from there the boxes will make a long journey into the arms of a needy child in South or Central America.

Graham says often the shoebox full of trinkets is often the first and only gift the children receive.

The High River Alliance Church is located at 1318 9 Ave SE and the Evangelical Free Church in Okotoks is at 28 Westland Road.
