A local singer capitalized on her chance to get in front of a big boisterous crowd Sunday night.

Michela Sheedy sang the Canadian and U.S. national anthems at the Saddledome before the Flames-Caps game.

"It was such an incredible experience, such an honour to be a representative of the NHL and the Calgary Flames and not only that, more importantly our country," Sheedy says. "Such a cool experience to stand in the Saddledome where I've seen many hockey games and some of my favourite artists play there and I got to sing in that same building it was really incredible."

The Flames are looking for a back-up to George Canyon who's busy touring with a new single and isn't available all the time. Sheedy says she hopes she's the right person for the job and it's been a really cool experience so far.

"You entered online and you did a submission of a video or an audio file of you singing the anthems and then they narrowed it down to around 15 or 20 of us," she says. "I got the call from George Canyon himself saying 'we'd like you to come audition for us at the Saddledome and it was really cool to just stand in the Saddledome, even when it wasn't full of screaming Flames fans, but just singing in front of George and some representatives of the Flames."

Sheedy also sang the anthem before a Flames pre-season game.

Sunday night's game, since it featured an American opponent, meant singing the notoriously difficult U.S. anthem.

"I've heard from many people the American anthem is one of, or the hardest songs to sing because it gets pretty high, and I've been practicing a lot, I was working with Tamara Beatty, a vocal coach on NBC's The Voice, and she also spends time here in Calgary coaching some other artists around town and she helped me prep for my audition and my upcoming performances so I felt really confident and ready to perform well," Sheedy says.

She's not sure if she'll get invited back to sing at another game but would love to do it if given the chance.
