With the growth of Okotoks, comes an increase in calls for the Okotoks Fire Department.

Fire Chief Ken Thevenot presented Fire Services' quarterly review to Council on Monday, showing a 17 per cent increase in calls over the second quarter of 2014.

From April to June of 2015, Okotoks Fire responded to 303 calls, compared to 259 over that span in 2014.

The responses are broken down as follows:

Thevenot says the increase is no surprise, based on the weather we experienced this spring.

"We had 38 responses to fire calls during that time," he says. "A lot of that is attributed to our dry weather and our grassfires that we had this season. Our medical responses are on-par, but the number is still fairly high at 115. It hasn't been our busiest quarter ever, but it's still higher."

Thevenot says he expects the numbers to increase ever year, as Okotoks continues to grow.

"Every year kind of changes," he says. "A lot of these areas, they change positions, the numbers change, but overall, the growth is fairly steady in all areas, across the board. So, in the last five years, it has been consistently rising in all the areas."

Thevenot says of all the calls, there are a few that stand out in his mind.

"The Bull Pen fire was one of the major structure fires that we did have," he says. "We had a few major grassfires as well that stand out. One for me that stands out, we had one by the Okotoks overpass, in particular. We had a couple of vehicle accidents that were significant, so there's always some major events going on here."

Thevenot says after two quarters, the fire department responded to 107 more calls than last year, and are on pace for about 1,122 for the year, over 100 more than the 1,011 in 2014.
