Alberta now has a new official opposition party after the merger between the Wildrose and Progressive Conservative Parties.

Foothills residents seem pleased with the results of the unity vote.

One constituent, Debbie Hamilton says she's hoping the new United Conservative Party will rid the province of the NDP Government.

"I'm glad they merged, anything to get rid of the NDP and Rachel Notley, that's my opinion."

Fellow resident Anna Wolfe agrees, while she's wary of the new party, she's hoping the new UCP will be enough for change during election time.

"I don't know if that's going to make a big difference in our views on politics, but if it bumps Rachel Notley out then I think that's a very positive thing."

The Wildrose and PC's members both voted 95% in favour of becoming one party over the weekend in separate unity votes.
