The Okotoks Food Bank will be receiving some extra support at the end of the month, thanks to a few games of cornhole.

The 2nd Annual Cornhole Classic Fundraiser will be returning on Saturday, June 29th, where they will be raising money for the food bank.

The idea for the fundraiser began when Shane Evong and Trevor Wheaton went out for drinks last year, and they decided they should give back to the community.

"At the time, I know the food bank was having a tough time, so we thought it would be cool to take our love for cornhole, which we played when we were camping, into more mainstream and use it for a charity event," Evong explains. "So, we get the idea of let's have a cornhole tournament on the Canada Day weekend in support of the local food bank. And that's where it all came about."

While there will be a barrel onsite for food donations, they are primarily wanting to raise cash for the Food Bank.

"All the proceeds that we raise will go to the Okotoks Food Bank. So, we have sponsorship opportunities available, and we also have the entrance fee of $40 per team that will go in as well. And we've covered the cost of the boards last year, so we're hoping that we will have more money to supply to the Food Bank," Evong says.

Proceeds from food and beverage sales will go towards the Food Bank as well.

There are roughly 40 cornhole teams already signed up, but they are hoping to see 60 teams show up to this year's fundraiser.

"It doesn't matter if you're a beginner, never played before, or a veteran, the way we have it designed there'll end up being two groups for more competitive people as well as just more recreational people, so it's fun for everyone."

Even though they want everyone to have as much fun as possible throughout the day and raise money for the Food Bank, there will be a small prize for the winning teams.

There will be food trucks, games for kids, cornhole, a beer tent, and more at the Fundraiser at Ethel Tucker Park, next to the library.

Last year, they were able to raise $3500 for the Food Bank.

The fundraiser will run from 11 am to 5 pm, and there is still time to register a team.
