An Okotoks player and the Canadian Men’s Rugby Sevens team will not be heading to the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

The men’s team finished fourth at the final qualifying tournament in Monaco last weekend after falling to Spain 31-14 in the bronze medal game.

The Canadians advanced to the final eight after finishing second in Pool B. Their quarterfinal opponent was Chile, who finished second in Pool A.

Thomas Isherwood of Okotoks scored one try which tied the game in the final minute, forcing a golden point extra frame.

Canada’s Noah Flesch scored the winner in extra time to give Canada a 24-19 win and a showdown with South Africa in the semi-finals.

Unfortunately, the Canadian’s luck ran out as South Africa scored four tries to win 28-0.

The men’s team met Spain in the bronze medal game and despite a valiant effort which included another try from Isherwood, Team Canada fell 31-14.

South Africa would win the qualifying tournament, securing the final berth for the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Not all is lost for Canada as the Women’s Sevens team and Vulcan’s Keyara Wardley have qualified for the Olympics.

They booked their ticket to France after beating Mexico 53-0 in the final of the Rugby Americas North Sevens.

They will face China, Fiji, and New Zealand, in the group stage of the tournament which begins July 24th.
