The Highwood Mustangs kick off their high school basketball season this week.

Mustangs Athletic Director, Michelle Alberts, says they're not fielding a full slate of teams this year.

"We're offering a Junior Varsity girls basketball team coached by Kelly Smith. A Junior Varsity boys basketball team coached by Keegan Vosman and our Grade Nine basketball team is being coached by our Principal, Brian Brandford and Lindsay Anderson."

She says basketball season kind of sneaks up on them a bit.

"Volleyball ended on November 18th and the next Monday they're into basketball tryouts. It's always a quick turnaround for the players, but we're rolling and league starts this week. We host our league opening games this Thursday (December 5). We host Foothills Composite here at Highwood."

Those games go at 5:30 and 7 p.m.
