Dawgs split second doubleheader in three days
The Okotoks Dawgs came away with four wins out of five over the past three days after splitting the doubleheader today with the Edmonton Prospects. Today's first game of the doubleheader went to an extra inning with the Prospects edging out the Dawgs 5-4. Okotoks would regroup and pick up the victory in the second game with a 6-2 win. Both games saw the Dawgs play visitors on their own field due to current complications with the field in Edmonton. Zane Morrison took the start on the mound pitching in three and two third innings. Cade Hermann, Trent Warstler, Seth Thompson, and Aaron Hammer came in as relievers. The Dawgs opened the scoring in the first game, getting two runs across home plate at the top of the fourth inning. Lou Anderson picked up an RBI when he hit a double scoring Jarrett Burney in for the first run of the game. Aidan Rose was next at-bat and made no mistake earning a single and getting Anderson across home plate. The Prospects answered with two runs of their own, tying the game at 2-2. The Dawgs took the two-run lead back at the top of the seventh thanks to runs from Brendan Luther and Dawson Santana. Prospects wouldn't stay down for long as they answered with two runs again in the bottom of the inning bringing it back to a tie game. The Prospects got the final run of the game at the bottom of the eighth which was an extra inning due to time constraints. It's the first time the Prospects have defeated the Dawgs in the 2024 WCBL season. The second game of the doubleheader had the Dawgs in control. It was clear from the first pitch that they weren't going to let Edmonton beat them twice in one day. Greg Ross was the starter on the mound in the second game, picking up a win in the five innings he pitched. Ross punched out three Prospects and only allowed three hits. Chase Tucker, Garrett Maloney, Easton Corey, and Quinn Tocheniuk were the relievers for the second game. The Dawgs came out swinging at the top of the first getting three runs in. With Luther already on base, High River's own Tucker Zdunich crushed a ball out of the park giving the Dawgs an early 2-0 in the ball game. Logan Grant was a man-possessed, as he got the final run by stealing second, then third, and finished it off with a steal at home on a wild pitch. Zdunich picked up another RBI after hitting a single and getting Santana across home plate to give the Dawgs a 4-0 lead. Prospects would answer at the bottom of the third with a single run. Kadyn Williams picked up an RBI at the top of the sixth when he hit a single and got Jason Arriola in for a run. The Dawgs got their final run of the game at the top of the seventh. Grant would get across home plater again on a wild pitch and proved he could not be stopped in the second game in the doubleheader. Okotoks will play their seventh game in five nights as they hit the road to play the Bulls in Lethbridge tomorrow at 2:05 pm.
